Art In The Cambodian Genocide

Analyze the piece of art for color and style (what stands out, what could it mean?

In the art piece there’s a man playing a type of flute instrument sitting against a tree next to a field of brown cows. The painting was made by Vann Nath. Vann Nath was one of the handful of prisoners who survived the S-21 Prison under the Khmer Rouge Regime, owing his life to his talent as a painter. I think he was trying to show what life was just before the attack. Kind of like the calm before the storm.

Make connections to Night

This Art piece connects to Night because it's like the beginning of the book when it shows how oblivious the jews were to what was going to happen to them. It's the same type of calm before the storm as this art piece is trying to portray.

Make connections to your research into another genocide.

That calm before the storm tends to be recorded in every genocide. For example, right before a rebel group composed most of the Tutsi refugees there are multiple records of how the survivor almost felt like they were falling into a trap and they didn’t see coming. Through every genocide, people have expressed that same feeling through art, writings, and other forms of expression.
